Chinplasty or mentoplasty is a surgical procedure that is necessary to correct the shape and size of the chin. After surgical manipulations, it is possible to create proportional dimensions of the oval of the face, the clarity of the cervical-mental angle becomes more pronounced, and the “double chin” decreases. Chin plastic surgery in Moscow is performed in the ART clinic. With us you can consult with a plastic surgeon, undergo all the necessary tests and receive further recommendations on care and rehabilitation.
V-Line surgery – to make your face oval!
A massive, wide, heavy jaw looks impressive in men, but does not adorn women. An elongated, angular or square lower part of the face does not correspond to the generally accepted canons of femininity, according to which facial features should be graceful and chiseled.
On the contrary, triangular, oval and intermediate V-shaped face shapes (oval in the form of a “heart”) have been considered a sign of aristocratic origin for centuries. The V-line of the jaw gives a soft, youthful charm to the features, since anatomically the lower third of a child's face is triangular in shape, which is the structure we associate with youth.
Types of mentoplasty
For this reason, this manipulation (which has a second name – genioplasty) is often recommended by a plastic surgeon. Mentoplasty can be performed for both therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. At the same time, the entire line of operations related to correcting the shape of the chin is divided into 2 large groups.
- Augmentation mentoplasty . It is used more often, and can be performed either by sliding genioplasty (dividing a bone mass with moving part of it forward), or through the implantation of an implant or the introduction of the patient’s own fat tissue. The operation itself can be external (access from the outside) or internal (mentoplasty through the oral cavity). Takes from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Requires preparation and is accompanied by a rehabilitation period (the final result is after 3 months, you can go back to work after 10–15 days).
- Reduction mentoplasty . Used less frequently, this is a replacement procedure. Aimed at eliminating the so-called 2nd chin (can be replaced with liposuction) or correcting facial shapes (changing proportions). It is implemented using sliding genioplasty methods (moving part of the bone back).
Ideal proportions of the lower third of the face
The lower jaw consists of a horseshoe-shaped body and ascending branches, which are directed towards the temples and are located at an angle to the body of the jaw. If this angle exceeds 125°, the lower third of the face has an oval or triangular shape; with a less flat angle, the jaw looks square or round. The angle of the lower jaw is not only an anatomical, but also an age-related feature: in young children it is 150-160°, and the figure decreases with age.
The ideal proportions of the lower part of the face were calculated back in the Renaissance: a horizontal line is drawn from the middle of the interval between the lips and chin; when it intersects with the ascending branch of the lower jaw, it should form an angle of 100-110°. Such proportions create a “v-line”, that is, when viewed from the front, the line of the lower jaw resembles the Latin letter “V”.
Indications and contraindications for mentoplasty
Correction and adjustment of the shape of the chin is necessary in the following cases:
- clearly expressed violation of the shape of the chin);
- there are congenital defects;
- sloping chin shape;
- injuries causing defects and deformation;
- small chin volume;
- cosmetic defects (dimples, cleft chin).
Contraindications to chin correction are:
- chronic disease in the acute stage;
- oncological diseases;
- pregnancy and lactation;
- other conditions do not allow surgical intervention. Specialist consultation is required.
Reshaping the lower jaw with V-Line surgery
The possibilities of modern surgery make it possible to change the shape of the lower third of the face and bring it closer to the desired oval or triangle.
Depending on the initial shape of the lower jaw, V-Line plastic surgery (Jaw Reduction, V-Line Mandibular Contouring) may include:
- changing the contour of the lower jaw by resection of the corners
- straightening the edge of the jaw body using grinding
- narrowing of the chin using T-osteotomy (excision of a small section of bone tissue in the center or pushing it down and forward)
Mandibuloplasty is performed under general anesthesia and lasts an average of 1.5 hours. In the vast majority of cases, intraoral access is used in the retromolar region (behind the last teeth) and along the lower arch of the vestibule of the oral cavity (under the lower front teeth), which does not leave marks on the face. The period of postoperative hospital stay is 1 night.
The active rehabilitation period lasts 10-14 days: during this period it is necessary to use a face mask, there are some restrictions on food. The face recovers completely after surgery within 2 months.
V-Line bone grafting does not disrupt the structure of the dentition and is easily tolerated. The operation is indicated for patients aged 20-25 years with fully formed bone tissue.
More about the operation
What does chin plastic surgery give?
This operation perfectly helps to cope with the shortcomings:
- irregular shape of the chin, which may be caused by a congenital defect or the consequences of injury;
- unaesthetic chin size.
If the chin was sloping or small, mentoplasty will increase it; long or large - will reduce. By the way, a small chin often becomes one of the reasons for early aging: if the mandibular bone at the place of the chin protuberance is too narrow, then with age the skin and soft tissues on it begin to stretch and sag faster.
With the help of genioplasty (chin surgery), the face will acquire a harmonious and fresher appearance, the profile will become clear and proportional. Thanks to this improvement, the patient becomes more self-confident and gets rid of the inferiority complex. This has a good effect on personal and social life, and helps build a career.
If you want to remove a defect such as a “double chin,” see the neck lift section for information about this.
How is chinplasty performed?
Genioplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Before the operation, the patient needs to undergo tests. There are contraindications. One of the main ones is the age of up to 23 years, since until this time the skeleton continues to form.
There are three types of mentoplasty performed at the ART Clinic:
- Chin augmentation with facial implants . They are selected to suit the individual facial features of each patient. In difficult cases, they are made according to a three-dimensional model of his head. ART Clinic uses only new generation implants. They take root well and are completely safe.
- Chin augmentation by moving bone tissue . The method works well to correct a chin that is slanted or too small, giving the face a “bird-like expression.”
- Chin reduction using osteotomy . To solve the problem, ART-Clinic surgeons during the operation remove fragments of tissue of the lower jaw and move it slightly back, and then securely fasten it.
During chin surgery, an incision is made in the mouth on the mucous membrane of the lower lip. Therefore, the scar will remain invisible. In general, the procedure lasts about an hour. If it is performed together with other plastic surgeries, such as a facelift, otoplasty or rhinoplasty, the duration can increase to 2-3 hours.
How long do you need to stay in the clinic?
Since mentoplasty (chin surgery) is always performed under general anesthesia, you will need to spend a day at the ART Clinic - maximum two. Here the patient is guaranteed complete comfort and the highest quality of medical care. It includes constant monitoring of health status and various procedures.
How is the rehabilitation going?
To quickly return to your normal life after chin surgery, you need to follow the recommendations:
- wear a sterile fixing bandage for two weeks;
- drink and eat warm liquid food so as not to overwork the lower jaw with chewing;
- brush your teeth carefully;
- avoid heavy physical activity and active facial expressions;
- do not go to the bathhouse or swimming pool.
How much does chin surgery cost?
If you want to find out what the price of chin mentoplasty is at ART-Clinic, read this page to the end or look at our price list. It is important to understand that the price for chin plastic surgery, whether it is Moscow or another city, is always accurately determined only during a consultation with a plastic surgeon.
The reason is that, just as there are no people with absolutely identical faces, no two identical chins are found in nature. And the wishes of patients, as a rule, are different. Therefore, the price for chin mentoplasty in Moscow at ART-Clinic is exclusively personal. It may decrease during promotions and other events with discounts.
If you want to take out a loan for the operation or pay for chin surgery in installments, you can find out more about the conditions here.
Best results with 3D planning
The V-Line operation is designed to create a feminine and aristocratic oval face, an elegant small chin, and a more youthful appearance by changing the jaw line.
The VIP Studio virtual plastic laboratory makes it possible to 3D model the ideal proportions and desired shapes before surgery. Based on computed tomography and light scanning data, an accurate three-dimensional model of the face, head and neck is formed. The surgeon and the patient jointly plan the scope of the intervention; based on the model, calculations are made that are used during the operation.
Thanks to the VIP Studio virtual plastic technology, which Dr. Guryanov uses in his work, the result of the operation is as close as possible to the client’s expectations.
Goals of genioplasty
The therapeutic goals of mentoplasty are usually limited to reconstructing the shape of the face after serious injuries or long-term treatment, or correcting the bite. If you have problems with chewing, implantation genioplasty may also be required. As part of systematic courses of gender reassignment surgery, mentoplasty is needed in 80% of cases, since the shape of the female and male chin is different.
Main indications for therapeutic mentoplasty:
- microgenia (underdeveloped chin);
- oblique shape of the chin bone;
- defects of the chin block obtained after injury, or hereditary/congenital.
Aesthetic corrective mentoplasty is usually performed to eliminate a heavy chin, harmonize its shape with the rest of the face, remove the 2nd chin or eliminate pits, notches, and other defects. The main indication is the recommendation of the plastic surgeon and the patient’s desire to improve their appearance.
When is chin surgery not possible?
As such, there are no serious indications exclusively for mentoplasty. Being a surgical procedure, it is carried out in the absence of prohibitive conditions for serious intervention. These could be:
- systemic diseases;
- oncopathology;
- diseases of the heart, blood vessels, blood;
- poor tissue healing;
- psychical deviations;
- neurology.
Since a person’s bones continue to form/grow until they are 23 years old, mentoplasty without clinical indications is not recommended for people of this age. In some cases, restrictions are set for smokers. In case of infectious diseases and pregnancy, mentoplasty is postponed.
