Diamond microdermabrasion: technique, effect of the procedure and contraindications

From this article you will learn:

  • how professional microdermabrasion is performed in a salon,
  • best microdermabrasion products.

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure that removes the surface layer of skin made up of dead cells. Essentially, this is mechanical peeling of the skin using abrasives. In salons, the procedure is carried out using a special apparatus, from the tip of which a stream of air containing abrasive crystals is released under pressure (Fig. 1-3).

Typically, the abrasives used are aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium bicarbonate or sodium chloride crystals. The collision of the abrasive with the surface of the skin leads to the sloughing of dead skin cells. Patients often compare their sensations during the procedure to what they feel when a cat licks the face with its rough tongue.

Microdermabrasion 100% copies the Air Flow method in dentistry, which is used to clean teeth from pigmented plaque. This method uses a water-air spray containing soda crystals. As a result, teeth become snow-white.

Important: since human skin recovers in approximately 30-day intervals, you need to understand that skin improvement after professional microdermabrasion in a salon will be temporary. To maintain the results, you must repeat the procedure every 2-4 weeks.

Diamond microdermabrasion of the face: reviews

Removal of the superficial dead layer of skin can be carried out not only with the help of a stream of air with abrasive particles. Recently, devices have appeared whose working nozzles have embedded edges of artificial diamonds on their surface (Fig. 4-5). The doctor simply moves this attachment over the patient’s skin, sanding off the surface layer of skin, and a vacuum suction sucks up the detached skin particles.

The only advantage of this method is that it is safer for use in the patient's eyes and lips, because... there is no air jet with abrasive crystals that can injure the cornea of the eyes or the red border of the lips. But even with the standard technique, such complications usually do not arise. Diamond microdermabrasion is often called diamond facial peeling by patients.

What is this procedure?

Microdermabrasion is, in fact, a modern version of mechanical skin resurfacing, but more gentle and effective. Unlike dermabrasion, when the middle and deep layers of the skin are affected, with this method only the top layer of the epidermis is removed.

Two types of apparatus are used to carry out the procedure:

  • supplying microcrystals to the skin under pressure;
  • with a nozzle having a special coating.

Both of them are quite effective and are able to gently cleanse the skin of the keratinized outer layer, while simultaneously eliminating visible defects and activating the regeneration process in the epidermis.

Crystal facial cleansing using a vacuum apparatus is carried out as follows: aluminum microcrystals, applied to the skin under pressure, exfoliate dead skin cells, which are then absorbed along with the microcrystals into a special reservoir.

Crystalless cleaning is often called diamond cleaning, since this is the material that is usually used to coat the nozzle. During the procedure, the doctor passes a nozzle with diamond chips over the skin; under the influence of the abrasive, skin particles are also exfoliated and sucked into the nozzle thanks to the vacuum. With this method, the effect on the skin is gentler.

Diamond microdermabrasion

In both the first and second cases, the patient practically does not feel pain, but the effect of such peeling can be assessed after the first procedure: the skin becomes even and smooth, its color improves, and a healthy glow appears on the face.

Depending on the nature of the problem and the complexity of the case, it is usually necessary to undergo several microdermabrasion sessions (on average 4-6) with an interval between them of at least 10 days - the number of procedures and their frequency are determined by the doctor. Age restrictions can be called very conditional - from 18 to 60 years, since sometimes such cleansing is resorted to at an earlier age (from 15 years old) to solve, for example, the problem with teenage acne, and at a later age. Unless, of course, there are contraindications.

The advantage of microdermabrasion is that it can be performed on any skin type. And the nozzle is designed so that it can be used to treat different areas, including, for example, the wings of the nose.

How is microdermabrasion performed?

First, the skin is cleaned with lotion as usual, after which the doctor uses a marker to mark the area of skin that needs to be polished with microdermabrasion. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, after which an ice pack is applied to the treated area of skin for half an hour in order to narrow the blood vessels of the skin and make it dense. In some cases, a special freezing spray may be used, under the influence of which the skin becomes denser and deeper resurfacing is possible. This may require more intense anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia.

Typically, freezing the skin at a time is carried out for a few seconds on a small area of the skin, after which a sanding brush is used to grind the surface layer of the skin. To stop bleeding, a tampon is used and pressed against the skin. The microdermabrasion procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

Who is microdermabrasion indicated for?

To some extent, microdermabrasion can be called a universal procedure, since it will help solve many problems on the skin of the face, neck, décolleté, hands, etc.:

  • the first signs of aging (fine and medium-deep wrinkles), facial folds and wrinkles;
  • enlarged and clogged pores;
  • acne, scars (including the consequences of acne), stretch marks, stretch marks and any other irregularities;
  • age spots, including age spots;
  • dull, lifeless skin that has lost its elasticity;
  • follicular hyperkeratosis (“goose bumps”);
  • small tattoos, etc.

Due to the fact that the top layer of skin is exfoliated, after microdermabrasion, blood and lymph flow in the epidermis increases, and the production of elastin and collagen, which are responsible for youthful skin, is activated. Microdermabrasion can be considered as one of the most acceptable options for combating the first wrinkles and preventing their appearance in the future.

Indications for microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is carried out to remove minor defects in the surface layer of the skin, such as:

  • Acne scars are the most common use of microdermabrasion.
  • Shallow postoperative scars and scars after injuries.
  • Superficial growths (rhinophyma), small skin cysts, nevi.
  • Rarely - removal of tattoos (laser skin resurfacing is more often used for this).
  • Age spots, where microdermabrasion is often combined with chemical peeling or laser resurfacing.
  • Wrinkles around the mouth and in the corners of the eyes.

Features of preparation for the procedure

Preparing for microdermabrasion cannot be called complicated, but nevertheless it should be. First of all, you need to contact a competent specialist in a clinic or medical center to provide the appropriate services. He will determine the number of procedures required and, if necessary, prescribe the use of drugs that will help soften the outer stratum corneum. It is also necessary to stop using products that contain lactic or glycolic acid for a week.

Since microdermabrasion affects the top layer of skin, it is not recommended to sunbathe or visit a solarium before performing it. In general, it is better to carry out this procedure not in the summer, when the sun is especially aggressive.

Differences between diamond dermabrasion and microdermabrasion

Diamond dermabrasion differs from microdermabrasion in the depth of impact on the skin. Microdermabrasion is the removal of the superficial keratinized layer of skin. The cleaning procedure does not cause any discomfort; the skin immediately after cleaning has a normal appearance.

Diamond dermabrasion involves a deeper cleansing of the skin pores, is used in difficult cases, causes microtrauma , the recovery period after such cleaning is 7 days, after the diamond dermabrasion procedure, the treated areas turn red and swell.

Microdermabrasion technique

The entire procedure usually lasts for half an hour and includes the following steps:

  • The doctor examines the patient’s skin and removes makeup. Then it is treated with a disinfectant. The procedure is tolerated quite well (of course, there will be discomfort, but they are quite tolerable), so anesthesia in the form of an application is carried out at the request of the patient (for example, he has a very low pain threshold).
  • Carrying out the procedure itself. When processing, the skin must be completely dry. The doctor runs the nozzle along the massage lines, making sure to adjust the depth of penetration of the abrasive. If necessary, he can change attachments to effectively treat all areas of the skin.
  • Apply a soothing and restorative cream to the treated skin.

Immediately after microdermabrasion, slight redness appears, which goes away quite quickly. In any case, you can return to your normal lifestyle almost immediately.

Microdermabrasion procedure before and after

Contraindications

Microdermabrasion is a safe method, but there are some limitations. During the consultation, the doctor is obliged to ask the client about the presence of chronic diseases that may interfere with skin resurfacing.

Contraindications for microdermabrasion:

  • diabetes;
  • pregnancy;
  • spider veins in the area of cleaning;
  • tendency to form keloid scars;
  • damage to the skin at the treatment site;
  • herpes and other viral diseases in the acute stage;
  • individual sensitivity to abrasive substances;
  • dermatosis in the active stage.

The microdermabrasion procedure is not performed if you are using certain medications that thin the blood. These are current use of Aspirin and use of Isotretinoin during the previous year. When treated with these medications, the likelihood of scarring increases.

Behavior after facial cleansing

Although the procedure is well tolerated, there is a recovery period. First of all, it is necessary to introduce a number of restrictions:

  • Minimize the time spent outside in the first week after the procedure. In place of the removed stratum corneum, young skin will form, which needs protection from ultraviolet rays, so before each exit from the house it must be lubricated with a cream with a protection level of at least 20.
  • Avoid cleansing the skin with scrubs and products containing acids, waxing and other similar procedures for 3 days.
  • Do not use decorative cosmetics for 3-4 days (ideally a week).
  • If possible, avoid sports, saunas, etc. for a week, as young skin is very sensitive to temperature changes.

At the same time, it is necessary to strictly follow the recommendations given by the doctor. Usually they come down to the following: to eliminate dryness and tightness of the skin, use special products. Moreover, after three days the skin may begin to peel off slightly. This is a normal phenomenon and will not interfere with your normal lifestyle if you take the necessary precautions.

Stars, swelling, and itching appear less often - this largely depends on the sensitivity of the skin.

Rehabilitation period: rules for facial care and recovery

Rules for restorative skin care after diamond microcrystalline peeling:

  • immediately after diamond cleaning, the skin is moisturized with cream;
  • After moisturizing cream, apply sunscreen;
  • At first, use such creams several times a day;
  • frequent consumption of drinks;
  • avoid direct sun during the week;
  • for the first days, do not use preparations with glycolic acid and alcohol, do not visit swimming pools, solariums, gyms;
  • do not wax;
  • Do not apply decorative cosmetics to your face for a week;

For whom microdermabrasion is taboo?

Since microdermabrasion is a hardware procedure and involves intervention, albeit minor, in the body, it has a number of contraindications:

  • the proximity of blood vessels to the surface of the skin - they can be damaged during cleaning;
  • tumor – malignant or benign with poor dynamics;
  • a large number of nevi;
  • development of an inflammatory process in the body, including on the skin;
  • problems with blood clotting or taking blood thinning medications;
  • exacerbation of some chronic diseases - you need to check with your doctor;
  • the possibility of formation of keloid scars;
  • skin hypersensitivity;
  • periods of lactation and pregnancy.

It is also necessary to keep in mind that an allergic reaction may occur to the components of treatment substances and creams, or to diamond crystals. If there is at least one of the contraindications, you must tell your doctor about it.

Selection of peeling creams

When choosing a peeling product, the main thing you need to pay attention to is the composition of the cleansing components. It must strictly correspond to this skin type.

Peeling creams include:

  • fruit and lactic acids;
  • ascorbic, carbolic, salicylic acids;
  • resorcinol, polymers, fragrances;
  • small particles of pumice, salt, almonds, apricot kernels;
  • vegetable oils, hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin.

It is recommended to use peelings after 15 years. The objectives of peeling at a young age: getting rid of fat, dirt and dead cells. At the age of 40, peeling creams containing active acids begin to be used.

Peeling creams have no contraindications because they contain a tiny amount of aggressive components.

For young skin (up to 25 years of age), superficial glycolic peels are suitable. Their action is aimed at painlessly removing dead skin cells, improving skin health, and slowing down aging.

From 25 to 35 years old, peelings containing fruit acids and glycolic acid are used. Such peelings fight the first age-related changes in the skin and age spots.

After the age of 35, the skin requires deeper cleansing; for this purpose, medium chemical peels are used. Such products relieve the skin of deep wrinkles, improve complexion, and promote the production of collagen and elastin.

At the age of 50 years and older, the skin undergoes serious changes:

  • deep wrinkles;
  • loss of elasticity;
  • gray complexion, pigmentation.

To combat such troubles, deep peeling is used, which destroys the first 2 layers of skin. Deep peelings tighten the oval of the face, remove wrinkles, scars and age spots.

Why choosing a clinic is important

It is important to set up the device correctly, follow the peeling technique, calculate in advance how many sessions will be needed to achieve the desired result (an unnecessary procedure may not lead to a better result), and finally, draw up a patient’s medical history to take into account all possible complications.

This can only be done by a doctor who has the necessary experience in this field and is provided with all the necessary equipment and related medications.
