— Julia, how much fun you have on set! And on air, for sure, all the cool stuff will be cut out...
- But no. This is exactly what we are trying to achieve: to show the viewer a lively atmosphere and real emotions. So we'll keep the jokes as much as possible.
— How were the duets distributed? Who pulled the strings and paired the artists?
— Duets are formed by a large team of experts: the production group where I am, the musical group, the creative group. It's always a brainstorming session. But in fact, the duet itself is not the main thing. The main thing is to create interesting stories that will reveal a different side to the characters for the viewer. And it's not just about performing on stage. Profiles are also taken separately: first, the stars tell who they want to perform with and why. And then they share their impressions of the stage performance. Believe me, it's very interesting to watch.
—Who chooses the songs? Buzova, for example, admitted that she would never dare to sing Pugacheva herself. And in the end, she and Tanya Bulanova performed “Strong Woman”.
— We offer participants several options. It was initially known about Olya and Tanya that they were friends. They began to think - what kind of thing could they sing? And then the idea came with “Strong Woman”, because this hit characterizes both one and the other artist.

— Which star was the most difficult to get into “Duets”?
- Everyone! With so many artists on a show, it's almost impossible to get them together in one place at one time. Imagine that you have 128 participating artists on the site (that’s how many stars will sing in “Duets.” - Ed.), two more famous presenters, a live orchestra... But everyone has a busy schedule, a lot of work. Plus the human factor. One person couldn’t come because of a tour or illness—the whole duet had to be canceled at the last moment.

“KIRKOROV NEVER swore at me”
— How do you like working with stars? Still, the audience is capricious: give one a smoothie and freshly squeezed juice, the other a separate dressing room...
- This is not a problem for us. We will provide everything you need. And everyone’s dressing rooms are already separate, because before going on stage the participants cannot intersect with each other. I’ll tell you a secret: we are now filming in one pavilion, and the stars are sitting in another. We bring them so that they will not meet each other anywhere. They even come from different entrances...
— Is there a specially trained person, maybe a stellar psychologist, who resolves conflicts on the set?
- Hmm... Looks like it's me! All of our production is tied to people, be it an artist, director, administrator or lighting designer. Of course, conflicts happen. But the producer’s task is to make sure that everything works as a single organism. It cannot be said that everything depends, for example, on one person: Nikolai Baskov or Philip Kirkorov.
— Isn’t it scary when Philip stamps his foot: “Everything is wrong, you don’t know how to work!”?
“I don’t know who he’s stomping on - everything is solved very easily with Philip and me!” He never swore at me. For me, all people on the project are equal. A star cast is no more difficult to conduct than cameramen or sound engineers. Quite the contrary: sometimes artists are even more receptive to some requests or tasks, although we have a very well-coordinated film crew.

— What are the tricks of working with each individually? What does, for example, the good mood of Nadezhda Babkina or Sergei Lazarev depend on?
— I don’t think about these chips. My task is to do everything possible to make the artist feel as good as possible, perform and please the audience. This absolutely coincides with the goals of the stars, as it increases their glory. Therefore, we work in peace and harmony.
- So what, can you scold?
- Certainly. If an artist is late, I will charge him for it. And it also works in the opposite direction: I always have to be on time. When we hire a cleaner for a job, we want her to arrive on time and clean the floors. When we call an artist, we want him to look good and give people a holiday. Everyone has their own job.
- How strict you are! Are they not afraid of you?
- Nooooo, we respect and love each other. But this does not mean that you can behave badly on set and insult the crew. I will always stop this process. It seems to me that this is true in any production. It’s like in a factory: everyone performs their task and the output is the final product. The viewer needs a ready-made cool result. No one is interested in our internal kitchen, although we constantly film behind the scenes, where you can see everything behind the scenes.

WHAT VIEWERS NEED IN A PANDEMIC
— How many people does it take to film such a show? And how long does it take from the moment the idea light bulb lights up until the first day of shooting?
— We have about 500 employees on site at the same time. Plus artists, extras. And the idea... In fact, this is a French project “Mystery Duets”, which was released at the beginning of the year. I looked at it and realized: it would definitely be popular, and I acquired the rights to the project. The Rossiya-1 TV channel also saw great potential in the project and ordered its production. For example, a stage with unique closing and opening “booths” and a mirror wall was created exclusively for “Duets”. It took about two months to sketch it, another month to produce the scenery, and we assembled everything for about three weeks. And the whole journey from the first viewing of the French show to today took about seven months.
— So you constantly monitor foreign television projects?
— WeiTMedia is a partner of Banijay, a world leader in content production, so I look at a lot of different projects. And then, guided by my intuition, I decide what to bet on.

- Sounds risky. What if later it turns out that no one needs it?
— Yes, there is a risk, but it’s part of my job. I look at a lot of projects, analyze them, choose what is best. At the same time, over the entire existence of television, thousands of ideas have been implemented, thousands of formats have been produced. And this is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, there is plenty to choose from. On the other hand, as the viewer says, “there’s nothing to watch!” That's why I'm constantly searching. In addition, we create our own original product. Although TV channels, admittedly, are less interested in this. For a completely new show, you need to shoot pilots, see if it turns out interesting, spend money... It’s much easier to point your finger at a ready-made project with a good rating and say: “I want it like that.”
— It turns out that you are the person who chooses how to entertain millions of Russians. What programs do viewers need now? Has the pandemic changed your preferences in any way?
“It seems to me that during a pandemic, as during the Great Depression, people do not want to dive into daily problems and discuss what is happening. When people talk about illness, mortality and vaccinations on TV or even on the Internet, a person just wants to be distracted. Watch something kind, sincere, and as relaxed as possible. People want to see not feigned emotions, but a real experience of the moment, to share these emotions - to rejoice, cry, empathize. What we need now is genuine feelings and real human stories.

— Just like on Instagram, when stars go on air without makeup, laugh, swear, shed tears... It turns out that this same naturalness has come to TV?
— Yes, this trend has been observed for several years now. And people are interested not only in stars. We see that now it is not at all necessary to win over the public by singing or dancing, it is enough to show charisma and be open, and not be afraid to let strangers into your life. If earlier there were unbreakable television canons about how exactly heroes should be shown, now we simply make people people.
The structure of our work has also changed greatly. Previously, there was a TV channel from which the order came. And now we move on from the product. If you have a great show, you will find a place to release it anyway. At least on social networks, at least on video hosting, at least in an online cinema. Content is king.
