Girls whose dream is plump and seductive lips increasingly prefer to turn to plastic surgeons rather than cosmetologists. This is easily explained by the fact that not a single injection will give you a lasting and natural effect of plump lips for a long time. But surgical lip surgery can easily change not only the volume, but even the shape of the lips.
One of the effective methods for correcting the shape of the lips is VY-plasty. I will illustrate what results can be achieved with the help of such plastic surgery using the example of my patient.
Technique for performing VY lipplasty
The method of performing the VY lipplasty operation itself takes place under local or general anesthesia. It depends on the patient's preferences, complexity of the intervention and indications.
- After the anesthesia has taken effect on the patient, the surgeon begins work.
- The surgeon makes V-shaped incisions on the inside of the lip. Usually these are 2-8 incisions on one lip in the central part, along the entire length of the lip or on the outer part. To correct the lower lip, as a rule, one incision is sufficient.
- Next, the tissues are separated depending on the volume and shape that was planned before the operation. Thanks to the tick-shaped incision, the surgeon can simulate a clear result in the shape of the new lips.
- After all the manipulations have been carried out and a new contour of the lips has been formed, the surgeon sutures the incision in the shape of the letter Y. In this case, the red border of the lips is partially turned out and they become plumper. To increase volume, double W-shaped incisions are made.
- At the stage of applying sutures and bandages, the operation ends.
There is also a slightly improved version of VY lipplasty - the Paris technique. This name appeared thanks to a new concept of vision for lip shape, presented by American actress and fashion model Lauren Bacall at the Parisian ready-to-wear week. To achieve perfect lips with a touch of naturalness, incisions are made in the vertical and horizontal plane.
The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or, at the patient’s request, under general anesthesia.
The duration of cheiloplasty using the VY method is about 60 minutes. The recovery period is 1-2 weeks. No hospital stay is required.
Methods of performing primary cheiloplasty
The most common method of lip correction is the introduction of fillers with hyaluronic acid into this area. The procedure is safe and is performed under local anesthesia. The only disadvantage of lip augmentation with biogel is the short-term result - the effect lasts up to 12 months. The reason for such an unstable result is that gels tend to dissolve in the body.
Another popular method for correcting the shape and size of lips is lipofilling. In this case, the patient’s own adipose tissue, which has undergone preliminary cleaning and treatment, is injected into the lip area. Fat cells for lipofilling are usually taken from the so-called “problem” areas – most often from the abdomen and thighs. Typically, an amount of fat is injected that is one third greater than the desired lip volume, since approximately 30% of the fat cells will be absorbed within the first 6 months. This procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia and usually lasts no more than 1 hour. The advantage of lipofilling is that the results can last up to 10 years.
Surgical methods of cheiloplasty are more radical and involve correction using the patient’s soft labial tissues. The following basic surgical techniques exist:
- VY cheiloplasty - the doctor makes one or several V-shaped incisions on the surface of the lip, then the inner surface of the lip is everted to the desired state and the resulting shape is fixed using a Y-shaped suture. This type of correction allows you to significantly change the shape and size of the lips, without depriving them of their naturalness. Depending on the number and length of the incisions, it is possible to enlarge the entire lip or only its central zone;
- cheiloplasty Paris - this technique is performed in a similar way to VY correction, only incisions are made in both vertical and horizontal planes. This method allows you to obtain fairly voluminous lips with a clearly defined contour, with a protruding tubercle in the central part of the upper lip;
- shortening cheiloplasty – performed when the upper or lower lip is too long. During the correction, an ellipse-shaped area of skin is excised, after which the lips acquire symmetry and an aesthetic shape.
Cheiloplasty, offered in the Omorphia project promotions, is performed by experienced surgeons from famous clinics in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The success of plastic surgery largely depends on the professionalism of the operating doctor.
Rehabilitation and care after VY cheiloplasty
Cheiloplasty is a fairly simple and quick procedure.
It does not require the patient to have an additional hospital stay, so you can go home a couple of hours after the operation. The main thing is to follow the rules of care during the rehabilitation period:
- For the first 3-5 days after surgery, you will experience slight discomfort, a feeling of tightness and pain. At this time, you should limit yourself from eating solid, very hot or cold foods.
- During healing, all food must be in the form of liquid porridges.
- It is necessary to adhere to strict hygiene, come to the clinic for treatment of sutures and examinations of the healing process.
Rehabilitation period after cheiloplasty
Shape correction and lip augmentation are performed under general or local anesthesia, which depends on the chosen method. A hospital stay is not required - immediately after enlargement, correction of asymmetry, volume and other defects of the lips, as soon as the anesthesia wears off, you can go home.
For approximately 1-2 weeks after contour correction of the lips, severe swelling and mild soreness may persist - these symptoms quickly cease to bother you and may be replaced by numbness. This loss of sensitivity in the lip area can last for 2-3 months. It will take approximately the same amount of time for the scar after surgical cheiloplasty to level out and acquire a natural shade, that is, according to reviews and medical observations, it becomes almost invisible.
Pros and cons of lip surgery
Since this operation is aimed at an aesthetic change in appearance, the advantages include the following:
- The result of the operation is noticeable immediately after the procedure.
- A very fast way to perform the operation. On average it takes from 40 minutes to 1 hour.
- No fillers are used during the procedure, so the results last a lifetime.
- The operation helps not only to increase the volume of the lips, but also to correct the shape
- Wrinkles in the lip area are tightened
- In the postoperative period, swelling may be observed for quite a long time.
- The occurrence of pain, which can last up to 7 days
In general, VY lip surgery is well tolerated by all patients and without any complications. This operation rarely causes side effects.
But, nevertheless, you need to know the following:
Typically, all postoperative symptoms go away on their own. If severe complications occur, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Indications and contraindications for cheiloplasty
If you are wondering how to correct thin, crooked, asymmetrical lips or cope with any other defects in this area, then it makes sense to visit a plastic surgeon who will determine whether you have indications for cheiloplasty.
There are two main groups of indications for correction:
- lip asymmetry;
- patient dissatisfaction with the size and shape of the lips.
In more detail, cheiloplasty allows you to correct the contour and volume of the lips, the shape of the drooping corners and the frenulum of the upper lip. The operation helps correct sagging lips, eliminate scars, papillomas, cysts and other tumors, and get rid of wrinkles in this area. Cheiloplasty makes it possible to remove the “cleft lip” or “cleft palate” - congenital defects that greatly harm the aesthetics of the face and negatively affect the health and full functioning of the oral cavity.
Aesthetic augmentation and reduction, as well as reconstructive cheiloplasty, also has contraindications, these include:
- chronic diseases in the acute stage;
- diabetes;
- oncological diseases;
- unhealed lesions in the lip area;
- blood clotting disorder;
- herpes in the acute stage;
- pregnancy and lactation.
The problem of how to correct asymmetry, lift drooping corners of the lips, change the size, today is solved quite simply - by contacting a plastic surgeon. The doctor will tell you what types of correction of the upper and lower lips are indicated and can be performed in your case. The doctor will inform you about the features of lip correction with gel, fatty tissue, and also using surgical techniques.
Other lip shape correction techniques
Cheiloplasty is divided into types depending on the goals pursued by the patient and the plastic surgeon.
Reduction cheiloplasty is aimed at reducing lip volume or length. It is not surprising that such plastic surgery is in less demand, since not many people want to voluntarily part with lip volume.
Reconstructive lip surgery will help with a complete change in shape, size or correction of pathology. Also used to restore lip contour after injury.
Aesthetic cheiloplasty is aimed at improving the contour of the lips, increasing volume or changing shape. Aesthetic cheiloplasty includes bullhorn, which you can read more about here
Cheiloplasty results – photos before and after surgery
In order to be convinced of the possibilities of cheiloplasty, it is best to look at the photos before and after lip surgery. Modern medicine does not stand still, this also applies to plastic surgery - methods are being improved and become more and more safe, gentle and effective.
In the photo you can see different types of lip shape correction - the variety of cases makes it possible to verify that today there are practically no aesthetic problems in this area that cannot be corrected.
The results of correction with hyaluronic acid, lip lipofilling, surgical cheiloplasty in the before and after photos, as well as patient reviews will be especially useful for those who are thinking about having a similar operation. Visual materials and stories about the necessary medical procedures, features of rehabilitation, and the resulting effect will help you make a decision about the need for correction. More detailed information can only be obtained during a consultation with a surgeon, who will determine whether you have indications for correction, tell you how long lip lipofilling lasts, what the composition of lip augmentation gels is, and whether it is necessary to use a surgical method in your case.

What types of plastic surgery do I perform?
To achieve the desired aesthetic result, in my surgical practice I operate using several techniques. Each of them is carried out according to an individual scheme.
Bullhorn
I operate using this technique for the following aesthetic defects:
- the upper lip is very thin;
- the distance from the base of the nose to the red border of the upper lip is disproportionately large;
- the upper teeth are not visible at rest or when speaking;
- there is asymmetry.
VY plastic
I perform plastic surgery using this technique if the patient’s lips:
- insufficient volume;
- there is asymmetry;
- it is necessary to change the contour;
- there are signs of aging;
- there were injuries.
During VYplasty, incisions are made in the shape of a V on the inside of the lip. And then they are sewn together in the shape of the letter Y. The required volume is obtained by slightly turning the wet area.

Volume reduction
Indications for plastic surgery:
- disproportion between the size of the lips;
- unsuccessful effect from a previously administered non-absorbable gel;
- injuries, burns;
- tubercles, asymmetry or other consequences of previous plastic surgery.
With reduction cheiloplasty, a strip of tissue from the mucous membrane of the lips is excised. An incision is made from the side of the mouth and runs from one corner of the mouth to the other, and then absorbable sutures are placed.
Corner elevator
With age, the corners of the mouth droop. Often a “corner lift” is done after 30 years with:
- drooping corners of the mouth;
- folds and wrinkles in the mouth area;
- rejuvenation of the lips and the area around them.
During the operation, the surgeon excises small areas of skin located at a distance of 3–4 mm from the corners of the mouth. The incisions allow the muscles to be tightened and sutured, causing the corners of the mouth to lift.
Corner lift is often combined with lipofilling of the area around the lips. The introduction of fat into this area eliminates “purse-string” wrinkles and rejuvenates the skin.
