Permanent tattooing is a cosmetic manipulation that allows you to improve the natural shape and give expressive color to your eyebrows for a long time. Tattooing is considered long-term, but requires annual correction due to the individual acceptance of the color pigment by the skin. Taking special care of your eyebrows in the first weeks after getting a tattoo greatly helps to preserve a beautiful tattoo for a long time.
What happens to the skin during and after the session
Cosmetic tattooing is performed using a needle technique of subcutaneous injection of paint.
Typically, pens with the finest needles or blades are used for this (to apply a pattern in the form of imitation of natural hair or create a pencil effect).
Under conditions of absolute sterility and the use of disposable instruments and suitable dyes, micropigmentation is safe for health. However, as with any microtrauma of the epidermis after tattooing, the client cannot avoid the natural reaction of the skin to the procedure (discoloration, swelling, discharge of ichor).
The recovery period after tattooing usually takes from 7 to 28 days. With proper care, the first signs of improvement in the condition of the epidermis are visible after 2-3 days.
Painkillers, anti-inflammatory, antiallergic medications can be used as home assistants in the post-period if the client’s well-being worsens, due to hypersensitivity or an allergy to the injected pigment.
After tattooing, the cosmetologist applies an antiseptic and wound-healing ointment. You will need to repeat such manipulations at intervals of up to 2 hours at home in the first days, but at least 8 times a day. To do this, even before tattooing or immediately after, you will need to acquire medical solutions of chlorhexidine or miramistin, and regenerating ointments based on dexpanthenol (Bepanten).
Alcohol lotions are not suitable as they will do more harm than good. The use of alcohol can change the color of the injected pigment and cause deeper damage to the epidermis.
Application of cosmetics
During the first week, it is strictly forbidden to use decorative cosmetics for eyebrows, and also refrain from using scrubbing agents and skin peeling. During this time, you need to use a special medicine prescribed by a specialist. Typically, experts recommend using several medications to choose from. In order to be sure that the process of restoring the layers of the epidermis is complete, it is best to visit a cosmetologist. You can use decorative cosmetics only after your doctor’s permission.

Why you shouldn't get your eyebrows wet
The formation of ichor, tightness and the appearance of crusts is a protective reaction of the skin to microtrauma.
The healing process is considered to have begun after the formation of crusts at the site of a previously open wound. It is the crusts that prevent direct infection from entering open wounds and reduce the harmful effect of external irritants (ultraviolet radiation, cold and excessive humidity).
So why shouldn't you wet your eyebrows?
It is prohibited to get the tattoo area wet. Moisture getting on the crust leads to immediate damage to the protective layer, thereby:
- Opening wounds to infections;
- Provoking inflammation of the dermis;
- Washing out of the introduced pigment due to increased formation of ichor;
- Changes in the final healing time of the dermis for an indefinite period.
Mechanical removal or tearing of the crust from the surface is also undesirable, due to similar consequences for the epidermis. On average, peeling off of the crusts occurs after a week or a week and a half from the tattoo.
It is safest to get tattooed before a weekend or vacation in order to minimize going out to public places for 2-4 days and devote time to thoroughly treating the skin.
How many days in total can you not wet your eyebrows after tattooing?
The standard time for the tattooed area to be in dry care mode (do not get it wet) is 4-10 days, depending on the speed of skin regeneration and the absence of external irritants. Try to avoid getting the microblading area wet for as long as possible.
Ultraviolet radiation
Exposure to ultraviolet rays can affect the quality of the technician's work. Therefore, it is recommended to wear sunglasses in the summer immediately after eyebrow tattooing and during the period of skin regeneration. Cosmetologists say that sunbathing in direct sunlight on the beach or visiting a solarium is prohibited, as this may affect the color of the coloring pigment. Therefore, it is better to refrain from tanning for 2-3 weeks after the procedure. After the specified time frame, you can start sunbathing and going to the solarium.
Care
There are quite simple, but nevertheless strict rules for care after microblading:
- Any washing with water is prohibited for 4-5 days after microblading. You cannot get your eyebrows wet after tattooing. Washing comes down to dry disinfection of the eyebrow area, as well as removing the ichor. Remember, your task is to promote the rapid formation of crusts, and not to get rid of them.
- The rules for disinfecting the microblading area include multiple surface treatments with disposable cotton swabs, sticks or disks moistened with solutions of antiseptics such as chlorhexidine, miramistin. The use of lotions based on alcohol or herbs, as well as micellar water, is prohibited, as they can cause irritation.
- The use of decorative cosmetics, peelings, and scrubbing in the first week and after is prohibited in order to ensure rapid healing of the skin. No matter how bright the eyebrows may seem during this period, the use of camouflage pencils and foundations will of course visually correct the situation, but will not help skin regeneration. It is worth enduring this moment; if crusts have formed, it is possible to use a suspension of cindol, which has a chalky tint.
- The best option for caring for your eyebrow skin after microblading is to limit your visits to public places to minimize the risk of introducing bacteria into the wounds. During this period, sun rays are contraindicated, as well as excessive exposure indoors (you cannot wet the wounds).
How long should it take to complete the procedure?
You can't pick off the crusts. They must leave on their own. This will happen within a week or a week and a half from the date of tattooing the eyebrow area. The speed of healing is determined by the characteristics of the body and compliance with the rules of recovery. If it gets wet, the color may not appear.
After the crusts come off, the color may be dull. The intensity of the eyebrow tattoo will appear over time. The final shade of permanent makeup will appear after 3 weeks, when the skin has recovered.
You should not wet your eyebrows at the beginning of the recovery period. If this happens, you need to carefully blot away any drops of water with a dry cloth. Avoid contact with water in the area of the drawing until the skin underneath the scab heals and it comes off.
It is not recommended to wet the tattoo of the eyebrow area for 7-10 days.
If necessary, resort to washing earlier than this period if the crust has hardened. The water procedure should be carried out as carefully as possible so as not to tear off the crust.
In addition to the ban on washing and wetting your face during the first days after tattooing the eyebrow area, you must not:
- resort to cosmetic procedures such as masks, chemical peeling, and scrub;
- touch the tattooed area and comb it after the procedure;
- go out into the cold and wind;
- sunbathing and visiting a solarium;
- steam the skin of the eyebrows, wet the wounds;
- drink drinks containing alcohol.
When can you start washing your face?
Washing is part of daily facial and body hygiene. So why is this hygienic procedure contraindicated in the case of skin rehabilitation after microblading? Is it possible to wash your face without getting your tattoo wet?
The process itself is harmful because there is a high risk of moisture getting on the skin, and eyebrow tattooing cannot be wet. Moisture on injured skin is a gateway to infection and also prevents the formation of a protective barrier on micro-wounds.
So when can you wet your eyebrows after tattooing and continue washing as usual? Facial hygiene as usual can be done after 7 days of contour makeup. Only after this period can you continue to use running water and gentle detergents. It is prohibited to get the tattoo area wet during this period.
Please note that the use of terry towels for wiping the face is contraindicated during the wet crust period. Before a dry layer forms on the eyebrows, it is necessary to use disposable cellulose towels or napkins, as well as thin cotton diapers.
General recommendations for the recovery period (memo)
- Avoid contact of eyebrows with water until the wound surface heals, at least until the crusts fall off.
- Do not use a towel in the eyebrow area. If necessary, remove moisture from the face with non-woven napkins using gentle blotting movements.
- Sports activities, visits to the bathhouse, sauna, swimming pool, swimming in ponds should be postponed for the first two weeks, otherwise the healing area may become wet. In case of steaming, swelling and redness may increase.
- It is not recommended to use decorative cosmetics in the PM area in the first two weeks, as well as products with an aggressive principle of influence - alcohol-containing soaps, scrubs, peelings, hormonal drugs. Refrain from using oils and masks.
- Removal of excess hairs should be postponed until the crusts have completely fallen off. This is a very traumatic procedure that can increase negative effects.
- It is not recommended to dye eyebrows with permanent dyes - paint and henna - before the tattoo correction procedure, even if afterward the survival rate of the pigment turned out to be low and the eyebrows, in your opinion, look pale.
- You should avoid exposing the PM area to direct sunlight and refrain from visiting the solarium. Under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, the pigment is destroyed, so eyebrows can turn out much lighter than intended. In the future, to preserve the pigment, it is advisable to use sunscreen on a regular basis.
- In winter, it is important to protect the pigment injection area from frost and cold wind.
- During the recovery period, it is not recommended to take antibiotics.
How to wash your face without getting your eyebrows wet
Even before or immediately after tattooing, you should practice cleansing your facial skin in a new mode - without touching the intended tattoo area. Of course, this is not possible under the pressure of running water, because you cannot wet the tattoo area. It is possible to wash your face in parts, using napkins or cotton pads - this is a sure way to carry out the morning procedure and not get your eyebrows wet.
Cleansing the face during the period of rehabilitation of the lipid layer is reduced to partially wiping the skin slightly below or above the tattoo area. It is important to use a minimal amount of water and not to wet the skin.
Water procedures should be organized as follows to prevent the occurrence of high air humidity as much as possible:
- - open the doors in the shower stall,
- - Do not use a curtain in the bathroom.
The use of terry towels is undesirable; preference is given to disposable paper towels, napkins, and cotton diapers. In addition, it is also advisable to change your body towel every day.
It is possible to wash your face without getting the area of pigmentation wet if you are careful!
Side effects: what is considered normal
Before performing the procedure, an experienced master will always find out in advance whether there are any contraindications and whether the client suffers from allergies. He will tell you how long the recovery period will last and how to care for your face in the first days. Only after this is it possible to discuss the shape, color and other nuances of creating permanent makeup.
Side effects that are considered normal include:
- Minor pain. Each person has a different threshold for pain sensitivity. For some, the procedure will seem completely painless. It will cause discomfort to others. In any case, tinting eyebrows entails less discomfort than tattooing lips or eyelids.
- Light redness or tingling is the result of the interaction of the coloring pigment with the skin.
- Swelling is a consequence of tissue injury. More pronounced after tattooing the lips and eyelids. It usually goes away within 1–2 days.
- Bleeding or hematoma often occurs when performing permanent lip makeup. The reason is poor-quality equipment or damage to the capillaries.
- Crusts are an important stage of the rehabilitation period and indicate normal healing of the skin. At first they are inconvenient. You cannot remove the crusts yourself, otherwise there is a risk of infection. You will have to accept it and be patient for 5–10 days.
Unfortunately, no one can avoid these unpleasant consequences. But provided that the specialist works competently and takes proper care after visiting the salon, the side effects disappear within a few days. The final result becomes noticeable after about 3-4 weeks.
How to wash your hair without getting your eyebrows wet
Each person has their own hair washing routine. On average, it is recommended to carry out this procedure no more than once every 4-7 days. This period would be just enough for a dry crust to form at the site of tattoo pigmentation.
But what to do if circumstances oblige you to perform hair hygiene in a couple of days, if there is ichor from a tattoo on your face? How to wash your hair so as not to wet the tattoo you just made?
The only way to do this without harming the wounds is to avoid getting moisture on your face. You should wash your hair using the method used in beauty salons/hairdressers - by tilting your head back. You can use this service in a beauty salon, or ask someone to help you at home using a shower head. Remember, it is still important not to get the tattoo area wet!
Currently, there is a selection of dry shampoos in stores that have gained great popularity when cleansing strands of bangs or finished hairstyles. The principle of their operation is to degrease the strands by spraying; such shampoo is removed from the hair by simply combing.
Other restrictions after eyebrow tattooing
Recommendations for basic care after pigmentation can be supplemented based on the client’s lifestyle. For example, if you are a frequent visitor to the gym, then for up to 2 weeks you will have to give up strength training that stimulates increased sweating.
You should not neglect:
- Wash only with cool, clean water, even if there is a dry crust.
- The microblading area should not be rubbed while drying; light dabbing movements will be sufficient.
- Your cosmetics should not contain alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, oils/phenols, hormonal components, allergic herbs, or particles that can injure the dermis.
- You should correct the shape of the eyebrows with tweezers without touching the scabs or skin underneath them.
Sports with permanent makeup
Eyebrow tattoo removal with laser
Cosmetologists advise clients to temporarily refrain from exercise and going to the gym during the eyebrow restoration period. Therefore, it is better not to work out in the fitness center.
It is known that sports and intense physical activity promote sweating. Increased sweating leads to the appearance of droplets of sweat on the face, which fall on the crusts in the eyebrow area.
That is why experts recommend starting to play sports only after the scabs have completely come off on their own.
